"The future 10"
are young journalists media critic Mark Jurkowitz says are worth
watching, especially if you want to be optimistic about the future of
journalism. Their ages range from 24 to 34; their jobs take them from
Fenway Park in Boston to Baghdad, and their careers cut across daily
and weekly newspapers, television, online media, or a combination.
(Adrian Holovaty, for instance, is now with Washingtonpost/Newsweek Interactive, after developing the award-winning Web-only chicagocrime.org, and helping build the award-winning lawrence.com and ljworld.com sites for a Kansas newspaper-TV company.)
"The people on this list -- culled from many sources -- may not be
household names, " says Jurkowitz, who writes for the Boston Phoenix.
"Some may be known only in their own households. But they are
ambitious, committed, and talented. They have made their
mark at a young age, have the potential for bigger and better things,
and may well have a role in helping set the course of the media
industry in the years and decades to come."
Students should find some interesting role models there. In fact, Jurkowitz's career
also has been an interesting one, even if he no longer fits the
under-35 category. He built a regional reputation at the Phoenix, Boston's
alternative weekly, then jumped to the city's big daily, the Boston Globe. Then, after a decade, he made the (some would say surprising) jump back to the Phoenix a few months ago.
