Next month my newswriting class will be looking at broadcast writing styles, with plenty of radio news programs and television clips available to watch online.

To give the class some idea of how much video and audio is out there, I'm saving this Smart Mobs weblog item on Video/Podcast Search Engines, which points to even more information on Search Engine Watch:

Video streams and podcasts have exploded in popularity on the web, but how do you search to find this type of content? And if you're a content owner, how do you make sure your multimedia files can be found?

Video search engines include Google Video, Yahoo Video, Singingfish, and Blinkx. Google offers a Windows, Mac, or Linux application for free uploading as does OurMedia, which hosts homepages and video from the Internet Archive. from[ Smart Mobs]

Right now the video searches may be heavy on amateur video clips, but they do show what's possible. The Knoxville News Sentinel's videoblog clips can be found through the Google Video search, for instance. Of course most podcasting directories list news programs too, but the search engines might help you find an item on a particular topic, possibly from a new source. (Even a simple search for the word "news" will work on most multimedia search engines, but it will produce a lot of technology news, and things like "Wizard News," which is all "Harry Potter" and "Lord of the Rings.")

Here in Knoxville, most of the local TV stations' websites offer online video clips, and our award-winning campus NPR-affilate WUOT-FM recently started podcasting (as well as offering live online "streaming," which it has done for some time, like most NPR stations and network programs).
