While I was doing the book-surfing. I remembered a book an old roommate lent to me years ago, called American Pictures, by Jacob Holdt. It was this amazing photo journal by this Danish guy who hitchhiked for years around the U.S., with only a few dollars. He got rides from the rich and the poor, and somehow, like a chameleon would blend in. That's what made the photos so arresting. I can't say I looked at the U.S. the same again. To see how poor the poor is, and to know that their stories are so rarely told. ![]() I want, I want! oh, and he's a bit of a nut, with a jesus-complex, if I remember correctly, but that's okay, his book is still amazing and insightful. 2:27:45 AM comment [] ![]() |

Support your independent bookstores! have you been to powell's, in portland? it's a great independent bookstore--a huge wonderful maze of new and used. And a great online ordering alternative to amazon.com! 1:31:24 AM comment [] ![]() |

![]() Here's the publisher's statement:Twenty years ago, Swiss graphic designer Jean Robert discovered a face in a padlock. Since then, he and his brother François have been photographing the smirks, smiles, and pouts in everyday objects, finding uncanny resemblances to human and animal faces in everything from buildings to mops to shoes. 1:28:08 AM comment [] ![]() |
