Viruses are not funny - But users can be. This is a great story on c|net about the latest "fraud virus" e-mail that urges the recipient to delete files, sometimes essential files that are in fact NOT viruses. Interesting psychology that people are willing to believe mails sent from otherwise trusted sources and not check with virus new sites.

It should serve as a reminder that the vast bulk of people out there using your sites are the ones that are not savvy enough to even defend against a hoax e-mail. It is very easy to overestimate the technical quality of your user so don't go overboard with gizmos and neato interfaces unless you know with certainty that your users are going to be able to use them. Test Test Test!

Environmental Information - (Nothing to do with dolphins or pesticides... ) What do you want to know about the people that hit your page? Not personal details, but what do you want to know about their environment? I have the following list:

  • Browser Type
  • Platform (and OS)
  • Screen Resolution
  • Refering Page
  • IP address
  • Whether cookies are on or off
  • Time and date of visit

What more do you want to see? If you do collect information, how do you do it now? Enquiring minds want to know....
