Sony is planning on releasing the next iteration in its game console, the Playstation 3, in 2005. They are claiming that this new console will be 1000 times more powerful than its predecessor, the PS2. As this article points out, that will mean packing 20 years of chip development into 5, based on Moore's Law. A tall order to say the least.

The advances they are talking about sound very exciting, but I am skeptical about their ability to achieve their goal. They are going out on a limb with reliance on cell computing and ubiquitous broadband connections. Microsoft, with its XBox, showed how off-the-shelf components could be combined to beat the custom chip in the PS2. Will this repeat itself?

If Sony can really pull off that dramatic of an improvement in processing power, it will destroy its competition. The real question in my mind is, can they do it...
