It's seems that RealNetworks is following in the steps of Netscape and releasing an open-source version of their client-server streaming products [here]. I think this is an important step for the industry. What I find even more interesting is the news that RealNetworks has reverse engineered Windows Media technology instead of licensing it. Microsoft has limited licenses to things like portable audio players and the Windows operating system. By reverse engineering the technology Real will make it possible to play Windows Media encoded content on Linux. |
