Ion DriveNASA is using an ion drive to send a satellite to the moon [here]. Ion drives are an example of how normal human intuition fails in the face of unfamiliar environments. Ion drives produce very little thrust yet, because they can run continuously, they can actually propel a spacecraft to distant locations faster than a conventional rocket is capable of doing. The promise of new forms of space propulsion has been tantalizing the imagination for years. This latest test is finally fulfilling some of that promise.
