Ingo thinks that just using doc/literal formatting instead of rpc style encoding doesn't change too much. Exactly! Before SOAP my little terminology universe reserved the word messaging for asynchronous calls. Now people come along telling me: No, the difference is the encoding. I tend to agree with Ingo here.
Now people might argue that a/synchronity is nothing but semantics. Wether your DB table insert in reality is an entry into a message queue to be consumed at some time later by a different component is technically not relevant. But IMHO it's nice to be able to model that in an API to raise the abstraction layer and to promote a different way of thinking.
