Dog Owner or Guardian? In Los Angeles, "animal-rights activists are urging the City Council to strike the term from local codes and replace it with 'guardian'."Mr Duane Flemming, president of the American Veterinary Medical Law Association, "contends that animal-rights groups ultimately hope to use the change to gain legal standing as guardians for animals in court." Would this begin to clear the way for Peter Singer's "humans and nonhumans ... "mutually satisfying" sexual relationships as long as they are consensual" [say what?]  and other such nonsense.

Man dismembers dog to impress girlfriend CA A man could get life in prison for the grisly dismemberment of his allegedly beloved dog. According to police, "he used a collection of swords and knives to decapitate his German shepherd, Marie, in January. A wooden stake had been pounded into its chest and pruning shears were found near the dog's neck." In his defense, his father said, "He loved this dog, and he was trying to prove to this girlfriend he just met that he loved her so much he could kill his dog for her." Way to go, dad. Dog sniffs out toxic mold for 'House of Horrors' family. "When Joseph and Angela Smith last year vacated their mold-infested Hanover home ... they thought their “House of Horrors,” as they called it, would be condemned..." After a plethora of travails, the family was ready to hire Susan Bulanda of Pottstown for her dogs' ability to sniff out and identify toxic mold... [Gettysburg Times]
Dogs have it when it comes to insider politics. DC Dogs are easier to befriend than people and dogs have that extra appeal that bring people back. Consider Brandy,  a sweet golden retriever that has become the main attraction at the Whitefish Golf Course. Or consider any of the White House dogs who have served as ambassadors (except for Coolidge's dog, a menace to senators) of  friendship for their presidential owners. Katherine Harris may be laughing at the dog, Percy, who poses to run against her, but she wouldn't laugh if it were a popularity contest; dogs, the nonpolitical animals, win handily in that arena. A wonderful history of presidential pooches and their charmed lives awaits you... [ABC News]
Designer 'Yap Wear' a hit AU Stylish dog coats, dog rain coats, doggie head gear, even doggie glasses are must have fashion statements for dogs around the world. No wonder "the pet industry is the second biggest growth area in Australia, with an annual turnover of more than $3.3 billion." ...  [The Courier Mail National News]

[Even our dog has two coats: a yellow slicker rain coat (which we had to cut and modify so his really big heat could fit through and a warm quilted coat for sub-zero temperatures). His head is too big for headgear and we'll probably never stoop to 'doggles,' [doggie glasses]. He also has reindeer antlers for Christmas parties, angel wings for Easter, and a wide assortment of neck wear: colorful bandanas and a neat Fourth of July 'stars and stripes' dog collar. In winter, he sports special tire-treaded booties so rock salt on roadways won't harm his huge dog pads.]

Dog'ter needed for depressed dogs BC "In the absence of Prozac for pooches, playtime has been ordered to relieve the depression suffered by 53 dogs now housed at the SPCA shelter. The dogs, ... seized from a Beaverdell breeder ..., are undergoing psychological tests and treatment as part of a criminal investigation." The article provides a fascinating look at how behavioral therapists assess dogs' stress levels and  how they rehabilitate them... [The Daily Courier]
What to do with vicious dogs? BC When a dog kills a person, it's obvious that there is no hope in rehabilitating the dog and the dog must be destroyed. But what about dogs that attack people, pets and exhibit aggressive behavior in general? Many trainers specialize in taming vicious dogs; most trainers will advise owners to get to know their dog(s)' tendencies and deal with those traits early on. Intensive socialization and training  are touted as a way to save a dog from ever becoming vicious... [The Okanagan.net]
