We just learned that Cory Doctorow, the reviewer, got mugged in San Francisco on June 30. Here's another reason to get a dog, Cory. A dog like ours, a chow, will protect you; our chow is friendly, but muggers and robbers don't know that and they're not about to find out. (The funny thing is that I worry about protecting our dog when we go out, not the other way around.)

Comforting video for the dog left home alone Florida A specially created 45 minute video designed for dogs "depicts the ideal day for any dog. Its footage accompanied by specially scored, soothing music, helps entice dogs to relax. Comfort for Dogs ($19.95) is available on VHS and DVD at www.comfortfordogs.com "
Cool. Our dog could use this. Although he's not destructive, we know he cries when we leave [how do we know? well, we taped him, just to find out what he did when we left the house. oh my, we were so wracked with guilt, we then decided to start taking him to doggy daycare, so he wouldn't be alone and lonely. It's rare occasion to leave him alone for long.] He likes to watch TV too.

Dog challenges Katherine Harris in Florida -
CNN - "...
Charter boat captain Wayne Genthner of Sarasota, Florida, said on Monday he planned to enter the name of his dog Percy as a write-in candidate for the Republican primary ahead of the November ... "
Gee, this story is hitting the big time. We picked it up at about 2pm ET today from newsisfree.com, but Yahoo had it at 7 am ET this morning and now CNN has picked it up 32 minutes ago. From Percy's campaign manager:
His official campaign bio describes 'Percy as a compassionate conservative who takes a hard-line with social parasites, particularly fleas and worms. His past is free of sex scandals, due to "timely neutering." ' Too bad: Percy isn't going to get invited to any cocktail parties, if CNN's analysis is correct. According to
CNN (or was it
Foxnews? I can't remember which), if you're smeared by a sex-scandal, you get invited to the hot parties, so people can say they met you. Well, I'd rather invite Percy than his opponent. He won't make a poopy mess of the election like some politicians would.

Dog breeder guilty of deception Florida "Calling himself a sleazy con man, Fort White dog breeder Robert Earl explained to the Columbia County Code Enforcement Board that he has been deceiving them about where he placed the waste coming from his American terrier dogs and puppies." [okay, where exactly did he dispose of that waste? we really need to know ...]

There are other advantages in microchipping as well...

Man's best friend or dangerous dog? UK In Britain, last year 3,400 people were hospitalised after dog attacks - a 25 % rise over the last five years. "Last month ten-year-old Nicki Hughes lay on an operating table for two hours having her face stitched together and a lump of flesh the size of a tennis ball cut from her arm which had been infected by bacteria from a dog's mouth."
Alice Beer, the author of the article, attributes the rise in dog bites to the number of people adopting so called dangerous dog breeds. What is interesting is her admission that the law designed to banned dangerous dog breeds (passed in 1991) has not been effective because it is impossible to enforce. She has missed the obvious about so-called dangerous dogs and that is that dogs are dangerous when they are trained to attack (as many pitbulls are). Dogs are more dangerous when they are allowed to roam freely unsupervised and untrained. Dogs are dangerous when they are neglected and abused and not taught to respect people.
Ms. Beer infers that people are too nonchalant about dogs.
'Doggy' is probably high up there in the first ten words spoken. So why are they suddenly and unpredictably turning on children like prey?' She absolutely hits the nail on the head with that quote. We should never forget that dogs are dogs; dogs are not people and they never will be. Dogs are more visceral in their emotions and actions than people; a dog mauling a child may have the
intention of 'herding and putting the child under its domination', not killing it, but the end result IS the same. A dog must be trained, because an untrained dog can, in effect, be as lethal and deadly as a loaded gun.
Ramen noodles goes to dogs The worldwide phenomena of pampering dogs has taken a new twist in Japan. Japanese can now share their noodles with their dogs thanks to a specially designed noodle for dogs. Although people may like noodles, it took research to create a noodle dish that dogs go for:
"A 5-year-old male miniature dachshund named Choko-kun was invited to partake a bowl of Wanko-men. Although raised on dry dog food and completely unfamiliar with this new dish, he tore into a bowl and polished it off in 30 seconds flat." Well, that's a no-brainer. Dogs like warm food, especially people food. Our dog begs for noodles of any kind (which compels us to occasionally give him one [noodle]). But then, our dog has also been known to eat lint...
