Classifying blogs by breed at The Talking Dog Seth J. Farber's blog, The Talking Dog, 'The Unofficial Vanity Blog of the Self-Proclaimed American Pseudo-Intellectual' has plenty of tales wagging in the political arena. Although he classifies his database of worthy blogs by breed, he forgot to include his own ... what breed is his blog? ... hmmm... attack dog? no... definitely not, even though he has an angry looking attack dog's photo near the masthead (probably to scare off the faint of heart... and weak of mind). The 'talking dog' doesn't just talk. He  babbles...  with political and social insights for everyone (except our dog, who likes dog bones, rides, walks and playing hide-and-seek)....  [Daypop]

1000s of dogs mysteriously disappear: pets stolen to order UK Dog theft gangs are snatching dogs from back yards and the streets in a bid for quick, easy cash. Police also speculate some of the dogs may be exported abroad for the German fur trade; some dogs end up as bait for notorious dog fighting rings. 'Valuable pedigrees are being taken and can make a thief hundreds of pounds when they are sold...' [Evening Chronicle]

The Listening Post: eavesdropping on the net  NY For the past couple of months, a listening machine or Listening Post (as it is known) in New York has been eavesdropping on the net. A voyeur's dream come true, the Listening Post provides a candid and sneaky peak into all the unrestricted chat rooms all over the net. Like a mad poet, the machine randomly records snippets of conversation and weaves them together in a living tapestry of angst, lust and obsession. The result is a weird and eerie 'stream of consciousness' record.  In early February, the tapestry revolved around duct tape:

'The casual remarks, desperate pleas, and lecherous queries that are sucked out of the stream of world chatter are then relayed in various ways on the two hundred or so small screens and ten loudspeakers that make up the machine's public face...  A few were truly panicky: "Does anyone know how to get duct tape glue off a dog??" No one, not Hansen or Rubin [the machine's inventors] or even the machine, knows where any of this is coming from. The man with duct tape on his dog may be an anxious New Zealander or he may be the President himself...' [New Yorker - Talk of the Town] (read on for an amazing journey into the millions of minds) (I'd really like to get an rss feed of the Listening Post. )

1000s of pets likely euthanized as US military deploys to Middle East  TN 'Nearly 20,000 Fort Campbell troops will deploy to the Middle East within a few weeks, and some soldiers may have difficulty finding a home for their dog or cat...' Pet owners who must deploy or move and can't take their furry companions with them can try to find pet foster homes, sitting services, adoption or surrender the animal to an animal shelter. 'The latter choice usually means the dog or cat must be put down. The majority are euthanized because we lack the space to hold them...' Frilly laced coffins for pets Singapore 'Animal lovers in Singapore who prefer to give their pets a grand farewell can do so with frilly lace coffins, but it will cost more than a human cremation...' So far, business is slow. [Gulf Daily News]
Buried terrier survives against the odds UK 'A camera used to try and locate a terrier that had become trapped down a hole ended up saving its life after the dog clamped its jaws around the device and was pulled to safety...' The dog seemed no worse for its ordeal even though it had disappeared down the hole about 1 pm on the previous day...

'We all learnt an important lesson from this rescue — just because an animal hasn't been heard, this doesn't mean they're not alive...' Canine heros: Dog saves owner from freezing DE After a slip on black ice knocked the slippers off Joseph Zito's feet, his devoted Corgi curled up on his owner's bare feet for 10 hours:

'It was a cold February night, but Joseph Zito didn't dress for the weather when he took his dog Duke for a walk. He didn't even put on a pair of socks because he didn't think he'd be out that long. But what started as a 10-minute walk Feb. 11 turned into a 10-hour ordeal for Zito, 82, and Duke, a 7-year-old Pembroke Welsh Corgi...' [News Journal]

Linwood Dalmatian headed to hall of fame NJ  Daytona, a rescued Dalmation, will join New Jersey's Animal Hall of Fame, honoring working animals, therapy animals, companion animals and those who perform acts of heroism. Daytona helps fire companies teach fire safety in schools throughout Linwood:

'Every October, Daytona goes to schools and fire halls and shows children how to 'stop, drop and roll,' approach a door and check if it is hot and crawl on her belly to get under the smoke and out of a room.' Daytona's next trick to learn is how to dial 911. [Press of Atlantic City]

Woman leaves her millions to cats and dogs NZ 'An eccentric Christchurch woman who died in a house fire left a multi-million dollar fortune to cats and dogs. At least 3 million is believed to have gone to an animal welfare trust set up by Aileen Milligan 78.... Like Zsa Zsa Gabor, it was a poodle that Mrs Milligan lavished with love... ' Unlike Gabor, Mrs. Milligan remained steadfastly reclusive and lavished her affection on her dog. Animal welfare organizations are encouraged to apply for funding... [Stuff (NZ) National]

Related: Fido can share the wealth KS Now that dogs have guardians, it's only logical that they can inherit their wealth too. And not a moment too soon. Would you want your beloved pet to end up in a heartless kennel or worse, in an animal shelter (where it's more likely than not to have just a few miserable days to live.) 'About 40 million U.S. households own dogs and 34.7 million own cats, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Already, as many as 27 percent of those pet owners include their animals in their wills... the average amount left to a pet: $25,000...'  [Miami Herald]

You can't will your estate to a pet 'You can't leave your estate to animals, but you can provide for their care after you die', says Jeff Thompson, member of the Memphis law firm of Martin, Tate, Morrow & Marston, PC. Setting up a trust for the animals and finding a responsible caretaker will ensure your animals future without you... [Naples News]

Pet Estates Trust funds set up to pamper pets after owners die..  'Tiger, Snowball and Snookie will be able to play all day long in their own yard, take in a movie, and then get a massage to relieve the stress of the day -- all in the comfort of their own kitty condominium. But only if the pet cats outlive their owner....' According to the owner of Pet Estates, Mary Lynn Gagnon, 'some of our older clients, as they were passing away, didn't make provisions for their pets, so they were euthanized.' She set up the trust fund to help owners ensure otherwise.

Chicago Kennel Club Show features services for pampering Fido IL Visitors and participants in the weekend Chicago Kennel Club Show viewed products and services for pampered pooches: doggie treadmills, intuitive 'psychic' readings, massages, dog-chakra posters and animal-communicator sessions. Over 11,000 dogs participated in the show:

'Sunday's top dog was a Pekinese, Champion Linn-Lee's St. Martin, of Morris, Alabama. The dog was named Best in Show. Saturday's Best-in-Show winner was a Norfolk terrier, Champion Crackinor Cause Celebre, from Peterborough, New Hampshire.' [Chicago Sun Times]

Prison executes 'guilty' guard-dogs Serbia Two guard dogs were summarily executed by gunshot, instead of receiving early retirement (the reprimand for human guards includes fines and early retirement)...

'Authorities at a prison in the northern Serbian town of Sombor sentenced to death and executed two guard dogs, blaming them for an escape of five inmates. The dogs of the famous Serbian breed Sarplaninac were found guilty of not barking during the getaway of five prisoners who had dug a hole in a wall and climbed down. The dogs were shot dead in Sombor's dog pound, sparking a protest from the local association for the protection of animals, Arka...' [The Age] Related: Dogs Executed for jail-break [BBC News]

June, 2002: Security dog led doublelife as thief Yugoslavia A mischievous dog, whose job it was to safeguard a factory, was caught on-camera, squirrelling balls of copper wire away and then burying them in the factory's yard. 'The guards had been told by management they would lose their jobs if the crook was not caught, but every morning another ball of wire was missing. To their amazement, after installing a CCTV system, they found the guard dog was taking time off from patrol to go into the storeroom and take balls of wire...' [Ananova.com]
