"A jury acquitted a Naperville attorney of disorderly conduct charges Friday for mailing dog feces to the gumshoes his ex-wife hired during their nasty child-custody battle ....The 59-year-old man denied trying to incite so much fear that local police alerted the bomb squad. Rather, Bates maintains he was trying to ease a tense situation that he feared would escalate into violence." [Daily Herald]  (This guy must have the best attorney in the world or a very unusual jury... )

Today is my lucky day. It seems I have nine lives. Normally I'm tapping away on the computer in the office during the day, but today I decided to  test out our new Hoover FloorMATE, an all-in-one appliance which vacuums, washes and dries floors.

After cleaning the upstairs floors, I moved to the downstairs basement and was busily rinsing and scrubbing with the floor machine when I heard a very large crash and what sounded like breaking glass upstairs. Our dog immediately came running downstairs and wanted to go outside, so I let him out through the basement door to the back yard. (ha... some watch dog... if he gets scared, he hides behind me or asks to go outside... )

What to do next? I decided to go upstairs and check rooms, one by one. When I got to the office (where I'm sitting now), I discovered shards of glass all over the floor, in my chair, and a smashed light fixture scattered over our floor. It  had come loose and crashed down without warning. If I had been sitting here, dead center under the light, as I normally do, I'd either be seriously injured or dead... ditto with our dog, who likes to wrap himself around my chair when I'm on the computer. He's lucky too... It's very strange ... because I changed my routine today, our dog was saved from certain injury. On the one day I'm not in my chair... the heavy fixture falls...

"The Washington Humane Society is the oldest animal protection agency in Washington, D.C. Since 1870, WHS has served homeless, lost, and abused animals in the District of Columbia; providing protection from cruelty, shelter from the elements, and a second chance at a loving home. No call for help goes unanswered, and no animal is ever turned away." (We've visited the WHS and we were impressed with the clean facilities, the friendly people and with the dogs who receive the best of care. Volunteers are a big reason why the shelter is so successful in placing pets in loving homes.. )
