Mad Cow Likely Focus of McDonald's Meet From the Life In These Times Dept. News is Crappy, a news site for the mad times of our day, makes reading 'crappy news' howling good fun. If you want a good laugh and you aren't easily offended, take a gander... (boy, am I glad our dog's food is organic... now to go check on those 'rawhide' dog chews... ). This made my day better...
Can you say "99 cent menu"? Or maybe a campaign to cater to risk takers: "Take a chance with every bite!" [News Is Crappy] (Note: it is highly unlikely that dog food may be contaminated with mad cow disease. On May 21, 2003, CNN News ran a segment on mad cow disease and the possibility of some dog food contamination was mentioned... )
Hot spots and your dog... To a dog owner, hot spots are not on the sun... they are the bane of a dog's life in summer, a boon to a veterinarian's income, and an odious topic to any dog owner. 'Hot spots', those oozy patches of inflamed skin, can crop up on a dog's coat in almost a heart beat. If your dog has any kind of implant, ie, artificial hip or knee, any inflamed or infected skin area on it must receive medical attention immediately. Our dog literally grew a hot spot today and I had to take him in to the vet where he received wound care, antibiotics, and a shave over his inflamed shoulder. I received a bill and learned how to make my dog wear a tee-shirt... he looks ridiculous, but he's feeling better...

It's been 4 days since we took in Trudi, a small Blue Merle chow chow, home.We decided to look at her after the Humane Society called and requested we consider adopting her. We weren't even thinking of getting another dog, but her story moved us. She is a wonderful addition to our family...
The stuff these dogs go through hits me hard; I was sickened by the fact that innocent dogs are dumped like old furniture. One of her former owners is very ill, so I understand... poor Trudi and poor owner; Trudi had just about used up her stay at the kennel, so we adopted her just in time. No one wants to adopt a chow chow, it seems, and nobody wants a 'used' dog. The Humane Society has a volunteer staff, but little money to treat dogs. That they managed to salvage her from an almost certain death is a tribute to their ingenuity and faith.
On Monday, we took her to the vet: Trudi has an eye infection, possible worms, an ear infection and a high white blood cell count. We got her microchipped, shots for lyme disease (after testing), treated with Advantix, rabies shot, etc. Trudi lost 12 lbs during her month long stay in the Humane Society Kennel, probably because she was grieving over the loss of a devoted owner and also, because she is so docile, she would rather permit another dog to eat her food than to fight over it. She has a new collar, new lead, new tags, new license, and a new life; and she's already making friends on our street.
Despite all her trials, Trudi is friendly and obedient. I'm walking two dogs now and it's easy... the two dogs like each other and they don't tangle their leads . Both chows are quiet, gentle beings... we're lucky. The Humane Society can always use donations; their dedicated staff of volunteers work odd hours and weekends so they can place dogs in loving homes.
