Family raises 20 cats, six dogs, a potbellied pig and 17 children TN A caring couple has created a loving family home for 17 cast-off and abused children... ' "These children aren't necessarily perfect. No children are. But somebody's got to look at them and go, 'They need homes too and they need love." ' [The State] (the same holds true for pets... we had hoped someone would adopt Trudi, the sweet chow, but since no one did... we're adopting her... and that puts us up to a grand total of two dogs... and all we'll  manage, unlike some superheroes....)

Operation 'Devil Dog' cools down Marine canines in hot Middle East VA Heat is making the Marine's military dogs sick in Iraq: '...military dogs were affected by the extreme heat. Some animals were getting sick and at least one reportedly had died of heat exhaustion..' A fund has been established to provide necessary canine cooling vests for dogs on duty overseas. So far, only $2,000 of the $30,000 (needed to provide  a vest for each dog) has been raised... [Pilot Online]

Related: Add a collar of ice to cool your dog in hot weather Last year, our dog found the heat unbearable in DC, so I fashioned a cheap effective 'ice necklace' for him. The ice melts as we walk and we time the walk to end at our front door when our dog's ice necklace has lost its effectiveness. He could last 10-15 minutes in hot weather as opposed to about 3 minutes in hot weather... Your mileage may vary... Chows have double thick coats which make them vulnerable to heat exhaustion...

Steel toilets for dogs installed in Vienna  'City officials say the city's 100,000 dogs leave 40 tons of excrement to be cleared away every day.... so the city is installing steel toliets...' [Ananova Quirkies] (After installation, are they going to train the dogs to use the toliets?)

Take a bite out of dog attacks MA Dog attacks usually occur within the victim's own family; the victim is usually a child and the dog often targets the child's face. May 18-24 is 'National Dog Bite Prevention Week', sponsored by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Veterinary Medicine Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.... [more]

"Seventy percent of all dog bites occur on the dog owner's property. A dog that attacks is very often the family pet. Parents and pet owners are key to preventing dog bites... man and woman's best friend will bite 4.7 million Americans this year, 60 percent of whom are children. As many as 800,000 people require medical attention for dog bites annually and about a dozen people die each year from dog bite injuries."  [US Newswire Press Release]

"I just don't know what to say. We can only think that George must have had some sort of fit and scared the dog. There's no way Ben would have gone for him otherwise. George loved that dog and the dog loved him." [The Mirror]
