Justice goes to the dogs OR Comparing a dog's life to a child's:

Klondike Musher rescued AK  Trouble of every kind dogged a musher during a sled-dog race: first, he lost his way and careened 10 miles off course, then his lamp stopped working; out of nowhere, wild dogs or wolves attacked his sled dog team:

'I fired two warning shots and they scattered. At that point I had 14 dogs going like hell and a light sled, and I went for the ride of my life. About the third turn I said, 'Hello, tree.' ' [Frontiersman]

Heart problems slow pet down CA [The Dispatch]

Bulldog goes to Hollywood  GA A bulldog may get his own canine movie version of  'In the Garden of Good and Evil' (The film's title: Damn good dog... ) [Atlanta Journal Constitution]

Number of stolen dogs on the rise NC [News 14 Carolina] (dog fighting drives an upsurge in missing dogs.)

I love a dog. He does nothing for political reasons...  Will Rogers

The Ark,  Montgomery County, Maryland, Humane Society's retail pet supply and grooming store will NOT sink, thanks to renewed support by the Humane Society, Montgomery County residents and pet lovers. Because of your support, The Ark will remain open this year. All profits go toward rescuing animals and related expense.

The Ark sells Buddy Biscuits, gourmet dog treats, which are FDA approved for human consumption as well. When you treat your dogs to these all natural, (no BHA or BHT ingredients), you can snarf down a Buddy Biscuit too and not worry about 'meat-by-products' or unsafe food.  At $3.99 for 16 ounces, Roasted Chicken Madness, Roasted Peanut Butter Madness will ruin your low-carb diet and leave you and your dog barking for more ...

If you live in the DC Metro area, please support The Ark by shopping there.  The Ark will stay open as long as people support it...  You can also order products by mail...

Cold weather harsh on pets too [KFOXTV] Other outdoor hazards of winter include:  antifreeze puddles which may entice pets to drink them; broken glass and sharp objects under the snow (I frequently walk in parks and neighborhoods littered with glass shards and sharp metals); and ice-melt, which can chemically burn a dog's paws.

George Cockrell, a renowned DC area dog trainer recommends Raspberry Field for service dog vests and supplies. The company makes every vest 'from scratch', their fees are reasonable and they display online samples of handiwork. An order from Raspberry Field may take weeks to arrive, but it's worth the wait.

SitStay.com offers quick delivery because many of its products are not custom-made for each dog. Raspberry Field has real live humans to answer your questions and you get quality, one-of-a-kind vests and patches. SitStay's recorded barks will make you laugh, but you may have to make do with recorded voices. Even so, they offer payment options from fax, visa, paypal, phone and email. SitStay also provides a forum and extensive online help. I haven't used SitStay for dog supplies before, so I don't know the quality of their service.

Librarian's Index to the Internet now supplies an rss feed for its what's new this week feature. Every week, a team of dedicated, tech-savy librarians scour the internet  and report back to you with handy resources, annotated like this:

Pbs.org presents: All about dogs, NOVA special : "The  program also investigates dog genetic diseases -- how they  reflect misguided breeding practices and, surprisingly, what they tell us about our own genetic disorders." Features  articles, photos, a book excerpt, interactive features on
working dogs and dog breeds, a teacher's guide, and related links. [je lii.org]

Knowledge Hound: The How-To Hunter "Web's biggest directory of free  how-tos. We also offer original content in our 'KH How2s'  section." Searchable or browsable by subject, tutorials [lii.org]

Human Society's Rural Area Veterinary Services (RAVS) "brings free veterinary services to poor communities in the  U.S. and abroad." The volunteer organization helps animals in Appalachian communities, on Native American reservations and in isolated rural areas. Online schedule of trips to which "veterinarians  and technicians are always encouraged to apply." Dear reader: our webserver Radioland application crashed a few days ago (always a good excuse to take the dogs out to play) and I had to restore Dog News from an earlier backup. Thanks to Lawrence Lee's help, we're back; he is a genius with a patient side.

Here's what I learned: Blame it on the dog(s) (humor helps) and be patient... back up, back up, back up (I had a good back up only 1 week old... ) If you are a radiolander, it pays to compact your data files, read the user discussion, and keep offsite backups... especially if you have a dog...

For dog owners: don't permit your dog to curl up under your desk and drool all over the surge protectors (I'm vigilant, but my dog is more vigilant about getting under the desk). Our dogs want to wrap themselves around my chair, or get under my desk and snooze on top of cables and switches.

Democratic political candidates go to the dogs for more clout:

  • Bark for Clark -- dogs show support for General Wesley Clark (while cats for Clark hiss at the dogs of the race).
  • Dogs walked for Dennis Kucinich in the 100 dog march... he has garnered 1% of the popular Democratic vote, thanks to 100 loyal dogs).
  • Howard Dean's friends and dogs put up their own dogs for Dean campaign (Howard Dean's family includes a three-legged cat, who owes its longevity to caring owners and vets...)
  • John Kerrey has his own campaign site domain ,no section for pets that I could find, but his site has an excellent search engine: where one can uncover off-kilter doggish quotes:
    • "Look at this weather," [Kerry] exclaims.. "If I could, I'd go roll around on the grass somewhere ideally a spot where a dog hadn't been." [Men's journal]
  • Joe Lieberman's campaign site contains a dogs for Joe campaign, where you can add your dog photo or gaze at Fenway, the official mascot (and pensive pooch) of Joe Lieberman's campaign...
  • John Edwards' campaign site glows with the win of Iowa's caucus, but a search for 'dog'  or 'pet' comes up emptyhanded. (update that picosearch engine... it's empty...) Disgruntled democratic pets may voice dismay over the lack of a pet biography on the official Edwards campaign blog).

Meanwhile, non-candidate funny man Jon Stewart and his wife spend their quality time at home where Jon finds time to  play with the family dog... [Daily Herald, UT]

Vet refuses to euthanize dog shot by police CA Even though its owners refuse to retrieve their rottweiler, saying it's too aggressive to bring home to toddlers, a vet refuses their request to euthanize it:

'He's no more aggressive than any other unneutered, 3-year-old male Rottweiler. I will not euthanize him...' [Contra Costa Times]

New carpet stops the dog show... at least for a little while... CA [San Diego Union-Tribune]
