As much as I've had a love hate relationship with museums, our
mausoleums of culture, I realized that there is something civilized
even in that, paralleling the idea of honoring the dead, honoring the
past, as an institutionalization of heritage. Yes, it means a winnowing
down, a filtering out, but at least some pieces, some artefacts survice
to explain our attempts at explaining our world, and hopefully inspire
more of the same, among future artists, and in the minds of those who
pass through the gallery halls.
I was also thinking about the idea of immersive baptism, how closely,
in some ways, that parallels rebirthing experiences. It's just a drag
that once institutionalized, so much of what are valid experiences of
that which dwells within and out, our full humanity and divinity,
becomes oppressive dogma, rather than exploration, or even a shared
language of inquiry.
