Meanwhile, my first iPod died a month or so back; I thought I had revived it, then it truly gave up. And I'm not quite ready to pop for a new one, so now I'm relying on the nifty 4GB nano I got as a DUX 2005 thank-you.
Now my PowerBook has also apparently given up the ghost. It had been refusing to reawake from sleep mode; now it doesn't even give me the boot screen, the hard disk sounds like the head is bouncing. . . yuck. The repair shop (MCSquared, in Soquel) gave an initial diagnosis of motherboard failure, possibly coupled with the hard disk failing. Double yuck. That pretty much says "buy a new one, Fred," but I'll wait for the official diagnosis tomorrow. I'm thinking seriously about just picking up a refurbished model, so I at least stick with the same environment I'm used to (Power PC vs. Intel) and don't have to buy new software. For as much as I use the laptop (mainly conferences and meetings), I'm not sure it's worth buying new.

Peter Morville, Donna Maurer, and others have announced that IA Summit is open for registration:
I'm going to seriously try to get to this one, and pass on the STC conference. HCI (CHI), usability (UPA), and information architecture (IA Summit) seem to have more for my current needs. I still think of STC as my Home professional organization, in the sense that Los Angeles is my home town: it's where I grew up as a volunteer, but not where I live now. As an officer of SIGCHI, my primary allegiance is there right now.
