I was never as big a fan of Kurt Vonnegut as some members of my generation, but I did grow to appreciate his intelligence, humor, and humanity. Today it seems everyone's running the same quotation, so I grabbed it from Dave Winer:

Kurt Vonnegut: . . . "Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies -- 'God damn it, you've got to be kind.'" [Scripting News]

Which comes remarkably close to summarizing my own philosophy. So, in honor of Vonnegut's passing, go out and be kind today. Then make it a habit.
