Worked from home this morning. Got on a plane at lunchtime. Working from my in-law’s house in New Jersey this afternoon and tomorrow. Weekend in the city, then home again.

Greensboro has one of those downtown public sculpture projects. Pretty funky stuff, too, contemporary, some good, some not so good, all more interesting than those dumb cows they had in Chicago that started the craze.

One of the best things about it was that the sculptures pretty much appeared out of nowhere, with no explanatory text or anything. Just cool weird shapes, plopped down in a plaza or by an office building or near a historical marker about Confederate soldiers. Gradually it became clear, oh, I get it, Greensboro must have one of those downtown public sculpture projects going on. The good news is the project will continue. Unfortunately, now the pieces will have labels and sale info...

In other arts news…Triad Stage offered us some comp tickets to Art. Triad Stage does a good job of staging plays and importing talent, but they still seem to have too many empty seats. My guess is that the marketing challenge is huge—one professional theater serving up a menu of different plays each season, each of which appeals perhaps to a slightly different audience. Triad Stage probably needs a couple more years to reach critical mass, and the continued renaissance of South Elm St. around it is a key to its success.
