Last word on ConvergeSouth from the Evil Genius. "I've been hearing about how great Greensboro is for years, and I never quite bought it. I was slap wrong, it is indeed a great town!" OK, time to plan for next year. 8:01:51 PM permalink comment [] |
Chris Nolan came to Greensboro: "I've seen the future of social networking technology, and I have to tell you, it's kinda dull. "In a good, warm-hearted, Craigslist kind of way." She says in her eWeek column that Greensboro "should become a high-tech test bed right now," because the people here are "not geeks...These folks are interested in the new, but only if it's useful and easy to understand and practical. They're approaching the use of technology and fitting it into their lives. They are not taking technology and seeing what they can prove with it." Chris compares the Greensboro vibe to the practical philosophy of Craigslist, and concludes, "It's also, fundamentally, the reason that more folks in the tech business should look to the good, if a bit dull, folks of Greensboro for some hints about where social networking software and its many cousins and offspring are headed." Don't be offended by that word, dull. She's onto something important. This is a user's revolution, it's about putting the web to work in everyday life. The real cutting edge is dull. 7:58:42 PM permalink comment [] |
Podcasting for non-profits. A motto of ConvergeSouth and similar conferences is that intelligence is distributed around the room -- Corey upped the intelligence level in Greensboro last weekend. 7:49:28 PM permalink comment [] |
DarkTimes: Brooks really, really doesn't dig Miers. Really. Lede: "Of all the words written about Harriet Miers, none are more disturbing than the ones she wrote herself. In the early 90's, while she was president of the Texas bar association, Miers wrote a column called 'President's Opinion' for The Texas Bar Journal. It is the largest body of public writing we have from her, and sad to say, the quality of thought and writing doesn't even rise to the level of pedestrian." Chapter and verse follow, banal to the point of inanity. Brooks' kicker says Miers is "a smart and good woman who has been put in a position where she cannot succeed." Bonus: Glenn Reynolds says, "Brooks writes a column for a private, subscription-only website." Herbert really, really doesn't dig Bush. Really. He's not surprised that the post-Katrina focus on poverty was short-lived. "As the president spoke, it never occurred to me that anyone would buy into the notion that Mr. Bush and his supporters would actually do something about poverty and racism. Someone who believed that could probably be persuaded to make a bid on eBay to buy the Brooklyn Bridge." 7:44:09 PM permalink comment [] |
