•••What's In A Headline?

Now, gentle reader, I ask you:

Pretend you're an editor of, oh, a big colorful nationwide newspaper. You've determined that you might as well ask the obvious question and get an obvious answer. Then you try to pick a good headline for the story about your little poll...

Poll: Catholics won't tolerate abuse [USA Today : Front Page]

Now the one linked just above here seems suitable enough. But visit the page and the big bold letters read:

Catholics show little tolerance

Ummm... does anyone else find that offensive?

"Catholics are intolerant!"
What?!?! Hello?!?!
Does ANYBODY think that might not be a good headline for that story? Please feel free to thinkback below with your own notions of grossly inappropriate headlines for the story. Maybe you too could be an editor for USA Today.

•••Nosesucker Redux

Two weeks ago doc told me to start easing my way back into my regular work routine, so I did. Then came yesterday, the dreaded Monday -- return to Dr. Nosesucker for the next nasal torture treatment.

I'll spare you any further details, but the conclusion of the treatment was a solemn faced, disappointed doctor informing me that he's been entirely unable to enter the right-side sinuses since the surgery, despite the large access holes he left for himself. He's entirely uncertain why they closed up.

Furthermore, having reported to him that while my headaches have certainly diminished -- they're not gone, just much more manageable -- he started to frown a bit.

"Your left side is starting to keep things trapped in there again," he said flatly. Are you sure you have not injured your nose, because your septum has continued to move too?" I hadn't, haven't.

So we give it two more weeks now, and next time I go back -- if still the headaches, pressure behind the one eye, etc.. then it's back to the CAT scan machine and determining if/when for certain there will be further surgery.

"This is very disappointing and unusual," says the doc.

"Umm, yup. See you in two weeks I guess."
