The Pledge
I was hoping to avoid this issue. I can just hear the oxygen being stolen from the room as the cranks gear up to blast at this decision. I need to say again, "If you meet the Buddha, kill him". That is, we should not defend physical renditions of the holy mystery. For me, that mystery comes before christ, before a personified God, before anything. This is the first part of the journey. Christ as a personal savior comes later, for some, after discovery of the central mystery. I myself have not arrived there yet. The Pledge of Allegiance is a macro. Like a macro in a word processing program, it is supposed to accomplish a whole bunch of things with the push of a button, or the mention of a few words. Macros are great for word processing, but really lacking when it comes to things of the spirit. You can't instill the magic with a macro. Especially one that is forced upon people. So my answer to this is "piss christ". As with the piss christ, if you worship the crucifix, the representation of the mystery rather than the mystery itself, then you are doing it wrong. If you get upset at the piss christ, then you are barking up the wrong tree. An object in a beaker of urine is a stupid thing to get upset about. Same thing with a pledge. You either get the mystery or you don't. No pledge is going to change who receives it and who does not. Many are called but few are chosen.
