Kate came home from Iowa a day later than planned and I had to miss a day of Java training. Kate and her mother drove seperate cars to Iowa. The one Kate drove had the exhaust fall apart under her and so they left it in some town and continued together to the funeral. Then, her mother's car breaks down. So they rented a car and Kate drove our noisy car back up here. I took the car back to the people who replaced the muffler. They said, and I believe them, that it broke in a different place this time and there was no way to spot it or prevent it when they replaced the muffler. Fine. But they wanted $430 just to replace the long pipe that connects the muffler to the engine. And I would have had to wait until Thursday. So, for once, I listened to the little voice in my head that was saying, "Take the car to a place that specializes in exhaust" so I did. They did it in one day for $200.
Wisdom I pass along for search engines to find:
Best place to bring exhaust problems is to shops who specialize in exhaust. They have the people and the tools and the parts and they do the same thing over and over again all day long. It isn't rocket science and so probably you don't need to go to the dealer, but it is cheaper faster and better to go to an exhaust specialist. The people at Bobby and Steve's Auto World had to wait til Thursday for their exhaust guy to be available, they also weren't interested in reusing my catalytic converter and were going to sell me a new one. The people at Midas automatically planned to reuse my catalytic converter because it was still good.
