I saw capturing the Friedmans tonight with Matt and Kara and Stephanie and Michael. If you need a movie to make your problems seem insignificant, this is it. Mind blowing subject, excellent documentary filmmaking, extremely sad, and funny all at once.
A nice treat was that one of the filmmakers was there to answer questions. They began the project trying to make a documentary about clowns. During an interview, the subject of their movie started raving about how much his mother sucked and they were like, " I thought we were making a clown movie! What the hell is all this?" They looked into the case on the internet and discovered this whole sordid history of child molestation charges, child porn, etc. So they switched to making a movie about the troubles of this family instead. He said that he was lucky that his partner in the filmmaking was independently wealthy because if they had secured funding for a film about clowns and this is what came out, then they would have been in trouble.
One thing he said in reply to a question was that the questioner was engaging in reaction by proxy. I have been looking for a phrase for this concern with everyone else's reaction to current events. I am guilty of it. I hear something on the radio and the first thing I think is, " How will those dumbfucks in Burnsville react to this one?"
