30 Minnesota Groups Urge DNR to Post Mercury Advisories at Fishing Piers.

Thirty environmental, health, and community organizations urged Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Gene Merriam to post fish consumption advice on mercury at fishing piers and boat launches throughout the state. In the letter to Merriam, the broad-based coalition asked the commissioner to develop and post these signs in time for 2004's fishing opener in May and to include basic information on the signs so that the public is fully aware of the mercury issue in Minnesota. This request included a description of the health threats of mercury, the State's guidelines for the safe consumption of fish, a clear list of Minnesota sources of mercury, and information that is easy to understand for all communities of concern. The DNR does not feel that posting is an effective means of conveying this information and poses other logistical and content issues. The DNR will increase educational efforts to get the information out to the public.
