World Championship Tour (WCT)
Association of Surfing Professionals and Vans Team Up To Air World
Championship Tour On Fox Sports Net USA & NBC
October 2, 2003 (ASP Int'l, Aus) This year's ASP men's World
Championship Tour (WCT) season is currently being aired on Fox Sports
Net in the USA, as part of the 'Vans Off The Wall' programming block.
The 12-episode series, climaxing with the Xbox Pipeline Masters, airing
January 25 on NBC Sports, follows the progression of the world's top
professional surfers as they compete at premier locations in perfect
waves, creating a play-by-play account of the 2003 world title race.
Following the hugely successful Boost Mobile Pro presented by
Quiksilver
tournament at Lower Trestles, CA, earlier this month, US audiences can
now witness the WCT in its entirety. From the initial Quiksilver Pro on
Australia's Gold Coast in March, then right through the Pacific leg,
Japan, South Africa, the all-important European leg and Brazilian
event,
before the final stages are completed in surfing's Mecca of Hawaii, at
the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing.
Viewers will feel the adrenalin of pulling into a massive barrel at
Teahupoo, Tahiti, and equally sense the frustration as surfers lose
close judging decisions and are sent packing to the next event. More
than ever before, US enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy the
world's best surfing from the comfort of their armchairs at home.
With one of the most speculated and highly anticipated world title
races
currently underway between reigning world champ Andy Irons (Kauai, Haw)
and six-time winner Kelly Slater (FL, USA), followed closely by West
Australian Taj Burrow and fellow countrymen Joel Parkinson and Mick
Fanning (both from Gold Coast, QLD), the excitement and drama of their
campaigns is being captured for all to see.
"It is part of a strategy to develop continuity of broadcasting, with
each of the 12 WCT's airing with regularity all the way from late
September thru January," explained ASP President Wayne 'Rabbit'
Bartholomew, of the Fox Sports Net and NBC Sports programming. "This is
aimed at telling the story of the ASP World Championship Tour in a
continuous fashion in a reliable timeslot, and brings the story of the
WCT to a dramatic climax."
