Mediaburn and the Jeffersonian Principle
the prescient Thomas Jefferson. In 1798, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter
to John Taylor in which he said the following about The
Sedition Act, that era’s version of the PATRIOT
Act:
”A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass
over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true
sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true
that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring
the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public
debt…If the game runs sometimes against us at home we must
have patience till luck turns, and then we shall have an opportunity
of winning back the principles we have lost, for this is a game
where principles are at stake.”
I think Jefferson is right. A little patience, and things will change. That is not to say one should be
complacent or inactive or abandon one’s goals, rather that one need not dwell on the past or bemoan what they consider
to be a certain future. One needs to move past momentary set-backs, get on w/the business of life, and keep
focused on the long-term goal, which in this case means ensuring America remains a free and open society.
Thanks to Michael Beckner for reminding me to get a little historical perspective….
