Mini Films - 15 Sec.
Cingular running mini film festival.

Following Nokia’s heels, Cingular Wireless has put together a cellphone produced film festival. Cingular is running two versions, one for film students and one for non-film students. The prize for the winning entry in both categories is a Motorola V551 and $5,000. According to Cingular, here’s how you can enter:

First, grab a new Cingular Wireless video phone and capture your best 15 second film clip. The subject is up to you, just make sure it’s super creative. Once you think you’ve captured your best stuff, send your video short to filmfest@rucingular.com using the Multimedia Messaging option on your phone. We’ll respond back with a link and a confirmation code to your phone. Shoot us back the code, plus a few lines about the inspiration for your short, and you’ll be entered.

Weekly prize for the top rated (by internet visitors) movies will also be given out.
You may enter the film festival anytime from now until January 31st.

Sly and the Family Stone
Sly and the Family Stone. Sly and the Family Stone -- Life
Sly and the Family Stone -- Spaced Cowboy
Tough figuring out what to post today--I decided on Sly and the Family Stone and then spent way too long trying to decide which tracks.

"Life" is a peppy joyous number, the title track from their 1968 album; "Spaced Cowboy" is from 1971's release There's a Riot Going On, which IMO allmusic.com sums up fairly well as an intersection between angry disillusionment and drug abuse. "Spaced Cowboy" is a trippy bit of smoking funk/country with a drum machine and some yodeling, amusing and unusual but oddly compelling. This should have been in a Coen brothers film; it might have worked as well for the rolling tumbleweed at the start of The Big Lebowski. And "Life" just makes me want to dance.

There's no way to sum up Sly and the Family Stone's output in two tracks, so just take these as two I enjoy. And if you haven't yet, poke around in their catalogue; the discs are worth the attention, especially up to 1973's Fresh.

A picture named BOX-&-CONTENTS.jpgThe Contents of a Box. I can't help it, I like this sort of stuff: My Brother was left this box and its contents by our Great Uncle Arthur. This section of the site shows some of the items he found in it.

More on time capsules here, and while we're at it, why not quickly generate your own time capsule (triple fab!). [The Cartoonist]

The Fresco School
44 original buon frescoes painted by fresco students and fresco instructors!. The Fresco School has held yet another successful workshop demonstrating their unique trademark, hands-on professional level instruction delivered with technical precision and personal passion that enables and inspires their students to create successful, true to classic buon fresco technique works of art the moment they enter the class whether the student is a professional artist, novice or an art student. .

This class was the first to take place in Baltimore, MD. Until this point students who wanted to take our classes had to come to the Los Angeles area. Due to the rapid increase in demand and invaluable efforts of K. J. Wolf a fresco artist and our East Coast Director, the school is in the process of expanding. This workshop held from August 18th to the 22nd took place in the sanctuary of a turn of the century Methodist Church in downtown Baltimore. The stained glass windows and massive stone walls created an atmosphere ideal for our students and the growth of their creativity resulting in 44 original boun frescoes. [Contemporary Fresco Gazette]

Please Help Curtis Coleman
Gigi-D L'Amour has invited you to:

Please help Our dear friend

Friends the following letter is regarding a dear friend of Mine Curtis. His voice is one sent by the gods and his heart is full of the joy of a child. This past year at the AZ regional Burn he gave me a gift taking me to his RV to play for me a personal private song , it made me weep. This announcement also made me weep. I do not know why the universe has such an ironic way of doing things but I do know this the human spirt the connections we creat the love we give can come back to us all. many of you know Curtis from toast, La precomp, Burning man, and other events of the like. I encorage you to do as your sprit leads blesings GiGi-D please feel free to pass this on as you feel lead

Dear Friends,

My best friend is dying, I'm sad as hell, and I'm asking for your help. Now is the time to show that "community" and "connections" mean a lot more than just bopping around at late-night parties together.

My friend's name is Curtis Coleman. He gives a lot to the world, and we desperately need what he gives. Last year, he was the nation's most popular elementary school entertainer, reaching tens of thousands of young kids through song to teach them about safety, public spirit, and most importantly, that they have a voice. We need our children to find their voice.

Curtis now has no voice, fighting an aggressive cancer in his throat called squamous cell carcinoma. Soon Curtis will have neck dissection surgery, plus aggressive radiation & chemo. On paper his chances of survival are less than 1 in 4, but cancer victims facing far worse odds have been "miraculously" cured when enough people came together to make it happen. We do amazing things together within our respective families, so please, please participate in saving Curtis' life and prove we can do amazing things together within our community.

So many of you know Curtis, are stunned by this news, and have already asked how you can help. Some of Curtis' closest friends have put together a plan of action we hope everyone connected to Curtis in any way will participate in. We need three things immediately for Curtis: money, time, and love.

Money: Curtis has no insurance, and the most promising medical treatments aren't covered by the county's last resort coverage. If everyone that sees this gives up a couple lattes and contributes at least $10 or more if you can, we'll be on our way to giving Curtis the best chance possible at life. Please help as much as you can RIGHT NOW by using Paypal ? to http://www.Paypal.com and enter account number friendsofcurtis@yahoo.com. Or, send a check to 1142 Garfield Ave, San Jose CA 95125. All donations will go to the Friends of Curtis Foundation.

Time: Curtis' girlfriend Andi needs help to cope with the huge burden of caring for Curtis over the months to come. If you can help with time for finding treatments, delivering an anti-cancer diet, transportation, lots of social visits, a mailing list, or even household tasks like mowing the lawn it would be tremendously helpful. Contact FriendsOfCurtis@yahoo.com and you'll find out that when you reach your hand out to someone that needs it, your hand never comes back empty.

Love: Whether or not you can help with time or money, you can help with love in so many ways. Visualize the tumors melting away into nothing, and a healthy Curtis making hundreds of kids a day laugh and learn again with his unique talent and beautiful voice. Put Curtis in your prayer circles, or your altars, or whatever connects your energy to the universe. Radiation is powerful medicine, but the love force of many can change the world. Help change the world now through one man that has touched so many of us and our children.

Ok, right now, just do it! Send at least $10, figure out how else you can help, and send a prayer. Then please forward this letter to everyone in your tribe and email lists with a personal note about how you are connected to Curtis, and ask them to participate in supporting my lifelong friend. Stand up for what is good in the world by asking everyone you know to help. Check out http://www.FriendsOfCurtis.com that will be set up soon. And thank you for the love. We are all in this together, and grateful for your help.

Arthur Zwern

The Staleness of Microsoft IE
Party like it's 1999.

Knowing a good thing when it sees it--or, rather, recognizing that 8,000,000 downloads is a hell of a lot more than the number of its new subscribers, AOL is going to use Mozilla's Firefox engine and release a new version of Netscape Navigator.

Microsoft is getting heat from every angle for letting its IE browser languish without a major upgrade in years, so AOL is jumping in by releasing not just [glassdog]
