Podcasting with Userland's Manila Software
No excuse for me not to podcast now. No excuse for me not to podcast now: Since I've just learned that Manila, the blogging platform on which I manage the rexblog (geeky note: I'm a customer of Userland's hosted Manila service) is now "the easiest to use Podcasting software on the planet"
(according to the totally objective and unbiased source, Scott Young,
Userland CEO), I guess I have no reason not to start adding MP3 files
to posts here.
Now, if I can just figure out how to use the
device I believe provides the most frustrating user experience of all time, the Sony minidisc recorder (is it just me, or is
this the least intuitive to operate consumer electronic product ever?), I'll start by doing
some sound-catching at the Nashville blogger 'event' tomorrow night. (I understand from some music friends that the minidisc recorder is great if you can operate it.)
By the way, I'm also a user of the Mac OS newsreader, NetNewsWire,
which I've decided has to be the easiest way on the planet to subscribe
to and download podcasts that automagically synch with iTunes. Maybe
someone can add a comment with a link to a "how-to" about this but I
figured it out with no instructions and, frankly, without even knowing
the feature existed, which means it has to be very, very intuitive. Helpful link: Lawrence Lee's "Instructions on Creating a Podcast on Manila" (via: Steve Kirks, this weblog's official hero) [rexblog: Rex Hammock's Weblog]

Moving Towards a New Music Idea
Global Music Sales Down in 2004 for Fifth Year. Numbers released today
indicate that global music sales were down 1.3 percent in 2004, the fifth straight declining year, but U.S. sales
gained over 2003. The IFPI site reports that if
authorized digital downloads and ringtone sales were computed, global sales would be flat against 2003. France and
Spain suffered double-digit declines. Usher, Norah Jones, Green Day, and Eminem are all cited for great sales in 2004,
asnd there will probably always be a market for blockbuster content. But the real healing of the recording industry, in
my opinion, will come from exploiting the long tail, separating hits from secondary tracks, and distributing easily
accessible files that play back across all devices. The business is a long, long way from these ideals.
