Daniel Gifford on The Interdictor (New Orleans)
Stockpiles and Serenades. Written By: Daniel Gifford
Hey everyone. Its been a long day, and Im really tired, so I will keep this short. I think I am delirious. I was pretty giddy earlier, and for no reason at all. I am starting to wonder if I am documenting the decline into the pits of insanity. Perhaps this is my own personal Notes From The Underground...
Apparently they are taking no chances. Mandatory (forced if you read between the lines) evacuation for Orleans Parish. While it doesn't look like Rita is going to turn our way, there is still a chance the the steering currents could release it South of Louisiana and allow it to move North. That could be bad. Especially if we are to the East of the eye. The other bad news is that I just heard that it will be a high Cat 4, possibly a Cat 5. I'm not sure if I will leave or not, but we are definitely well prepared in case we have to ride it out. We have plenty of bottled water, a good stockpile of food, and enough MRE's to feed a small army, no pun intended. So right now we are in "wait and see" mode. Lets hope for the best!
I still can't get over the responses we have received for this little project. You all are very kind and we really appreciate your support. It means a lot, and helps morale so much. Hopefully by this time Friday I will be sitting on a beach in Tampa, showered and clean.
I've had a few requests for an email address or a messenger screenname. If you want to reach me, my email is theemptypage(at)gmail.com (no spam please - Im sure this will already test the limits of gmail) and my aim screenname is finneganisawake. As with comments, I apologize in advance if I can respond to all of you. And please keep the comments coming - Everyone in our company reads them and they make our job a little easier.
I need to email some of my close friends tonight and check in. I'm sure most of them keep good tabs on me here, but its still nice to send more personal emails.....Then I think Im going to take a Benadryl and try and get some sleep! [The Interdictor]

Opera - Gratis

Sci-Fi
Free good science fiction. Free, good science fiction for download, some you might have seen, some new, all are worth the time. If you have only a few minutes, Michael Swanick's Science Fiction Table of the Elements features 108 short short stories. If you have a little more time, Kelly Link, called by Neil Gaiman "the best short story writer currently out there" has released her much-praised collection Stranger Things Happen. For longer reads, Charlie Stross has made available his cyberpunk novel Accelerando and his Lovecraftish Colder War. The creepier Peter Watts has posted the New York Times Notable Book Starfish, and its sequels as well [previously]. If you haven't had enough, you should check out the Baen Free Library, with books by everyone from Andre Norton to Larry Niven, as well as a large amount of right-of-center combat-oriented stuff by David Weber and friends. Also, the Science Fiction Channel has made available many well-known classic short stories as well as a lot of contemporary Hugo and World Fantasy Award winners [previously]. Finally, you probably already know that Cory Doctorow has four novels available under creative commons. Happy reading! [MetaFilter]
