Stroke, Stroke, Stroke!
Matt Hohmann of the ever-stimulating non-billable hour passes on this tip from Kevin Kelley:

Stroke, Stroke, Stroke! Kevin Kelly passes on this tip to identify when someone is having a stroke:

Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. But doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:

1. Ask the individual to SMILE. 2. Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. 3. Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently, ie: It is sunny out today)

If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call 9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.

This is a pretty good list, and is certainly something I didn’t know. Anyone who deals with older folks (estate planning lawyers?) should have this list handy for them and their staff.

Important stuff, since speed of diagnosis and treatment can make all the difference.

(Coincidentally, New Scientist reported Friday that speed may protect the brain against stroke damage, but they had something slightly different in mind.)

What does this have to do with sustainability, you might ask. We need brains, folks -- intact brains -- to think our way out of our crises. Let's keep 'em healthy and happy.
