D.C. and NY 1. Lots of good reading and think time---9 + 9 hours of air time and 3 1/2 + 3 1/2 hours of train time. 2. Celebration of abundance by overnighting in NY for the opera at the Met Amtrak business class is the way to travel between D.C. and NY Lunch on the 41st floor of the IBM building in Manhattan with Beate, Investor Relations for CEMEX, discussing the economy Boris Godunov's death scene The eight block walk back to the hotel at midnight through the drifting snow--a beautiful brightly lit night, quiet, friendly people shoveling their walks So sorry my friend was unable to join me 3. A great World Affairs Councils of America conference in D.C. Limited to 350 attendees---275 on wait list Ten or 12 of us from Anchorage Varying points of view without being extreme, either right or left---Andrea Mitchell, French Ambassador Jean-David Lefitti, Zbignieu Brezezinski Twelve of us having lunch with the Czech Republic Ambassador at his residence. Reception at the State Department in the Benjamin Franklin Reception Rooms on the eighth floor---marvelous rooms with antiques to die for---great hors d'oeuvres Closing banquet with a great buffet---food from around the world---entertainment by the Capital Steps (What a hoot!) 4. Saturday spent on the Mall The crafts jewelry exhibit at the Renwick Gallery The Holocaust Museum---Made me suddenly decide I am against much of the Patriot Act Museum gift shops 5. Ever so glad I live in Alaska D.C. seems to think they know beyond any shadow of a doubt what is best for the rest of the U.S. and that we should unquestionably accept it and be thankful for it! comment []4:59:51 AM
