"Open source technology is founded on an unwillingness to reinvent or monopolise the wheel; a sentiment that through active collaboration our software and digital assets can be more effectively structured, injected with greater functionality and made more sustainable over the long term." This quote by McHugh, DCC | Digital Curation Manual, Instalment on Open Source for Digital Curation, p. 54, accurately captures some of the feelings and beliefs I hold but don't often articulate when people ask me why I am such a proponent and user of open source software. There is also a very nice section about Open Document vs. the Microsoft Office suite, which should be required reading for all in academia.
