HARSH CRITICISM: Southeastern Conference

In a scathing indictment of the Southeastern Conference, Charles Elmore of the Palm Beach Post says the asking price of a 17-year-old defensive tackle from Memphis had reached $60,000, plus a couple of sports utility vehicles for his coach. Visiting recruits were winding up at strip clubs.

CONVICTED: Cedric Cobbs, University of Arkansas

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Associated Press reports Arkansas running back Cedric Cobbs was found guilty Thursday of marijuana possession, driving while intoxicated and speeding.

ARRESTED: Brian Burgdorf, former Alabama QB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Associated Press reports former Alabama quarterback Brian Burgdorf, the MVP of the 1993 Gator Bowl, was arrested Thursday on bad check charges. Burgdorf, 29, was arrested and jailed in Tuscaloosa on a misdemeanor check charge. The Birmingham resident is also wanted in Bessemer on a fugitive warrant for a felony check charge and in Birmingham on four misdemeanor bad check charges.

ARRESTED: Brian Andrew Chacos, University of North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Charlotte News & Observer reports Brian Andrew Chacos, a tight end for the University of North Carolina football team was arrested early Wednesday and charged with driving while impaired and consuming alcohol as a minor.

ARRESTED: Daniel Davis, Kansas State University

MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The Kansas State Collegian reports a fifth K-State football player in one month was arrested Monday. Daniel Davis, a junior running back, was arrested for two counts of failure to appear for a 90-day jail sentence.

CHARGES DROPPED: Ron Monteilh, University of Colorado

BOULDER, Colo. -- Colorado Daily reports University of Colorado football player Ron Monteilh will not be punished for his participation in a controversial football recruiting party last December, his attorney said Monday.

LATEST REFORMER: Mike Slive, SEC Commissioner

OXFORD, Miss. -- If the presidents and chancellors of the Southeastern Conference have their way, Tuesday will go down as the first day of the conference's new life. Kyle Veazey of the Daily Missippian says reform in the sandal-torn SEC is not likely.

NOT PRESENT: Ron Monteilh, Colorado football player

BOULDER, Colo. – Daily Camera reports Ron Monteilh will not be present for his second University of Colorado Office of Judicial Affairs meeting this morning because his attorney says the board is "making up their own rules as they go along." Monteilh is accused of breaking the school's code of conduct because of his alleged involvement with an off-campus party high school recruits attended in December.

MURDER UPDATE: Omain "Fats" Gullette, Syracuse football recruit

PHILADELPHIA – New York Times reports the police are not sure what happened, what the motive for the shooting was or who did it, but they say they have no evidence that Omain "Fats" Gullette, a Syracuse football recruit, was involved in any trouble before being killed in an honest-to-God hail of gunfire.

TROUBLED PROGRAM: Northern Arizona University

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Nearly one-fourth of the players on last year's Northern Arizona University football team have been arrested and convicted of recent crimes, according to computer criminal database research by The Arizona Republic.
