Gov. Mike Leavitt today announced Dr. Darrell K. White as his new Deputy for Education in the Office of the Governor. He will replace Rich Kendell who is leaving the position to become Utah's Commissioner for Higher Education.
"Darrel brings over forty years of educational experience to this position," said Governor Leavitt. "He has been a successful superintendent, a successful principal, and a successful teacher. I have no doubt he will build upon his experience to be a successful Deputy for Education."
Dr. White has worked in numerous educational capacities. He has been the superintendent of four different Utah school districts and the Executive Director of the Utah School Superintendents Association. He has been a high school principal, and has taught courses at Utah State University, the University of Utah, the University of Hawaii, and BYU Hawaii. In 2002, he was named the National Administrator of the Year by the National Association for Gifted Children.
"I am pleased to have the opportunity to serve in this position at a time when numerous exciting changes are being planned and implemented in public and higher education which will greatly improve the education of our youth," said Dr. White. "I admire the vision that Governor Leavitt and Lt. Governor Walker have brought to Utah's education system."
Dr. White received Doctorate and Master of Science degrees from Utah State University. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah in 1959.
