Nikon announces 12.4 megapixel D2x digital SLR, from DPreview. The camera uses a CMOS sensor from Sony and can shoot at 5 fps in 12 mp mode, or 8 fps in 6 mp mode. The sensor uses the DX format size and has a special four channel output logic to speed recording of all the data. The shutter release time lag is the same as the D2H, 37 ms. The camera can record GPS location information from a GPS reciever through a special cable Nikon has developed. There is a "Battery Info" menu option that shows the amount of charge remaining when using the EN-EL4. Image data can be encrypted on the right kind of compact flash cards. The camera's price has not been announced at this time, although some rumors place it anywhere from $4k to $6k; and the camera will be available in January 2005.

digitalreview.ca has a page on the new DSLR, as does Rob Galbraith.

VRlog has been quiet because I just returned from 9 days of hiking in the Yellowstone area, including 5 days of backpacking down the Thorofare trail to the "most remote" wilderness location in the continental US*, where the closest road is ~30 miles away.

Purpose
VRlog provides news, developments and analysis of the virtual reality (VR) world from a nature photographer's perspective. Since I am not connected to or funded by any VR vendor, I intend to objectively appraise what's going on, and the direction VR is headed in. -- erik goetze
