More on the Lloyd case

See the Innocence Project's description of the case of Eddie Joe Lloyd, including its depiction of the police misconduct which led to Lloyd's confession.  Note the IP's astonishing statistic, noted on its False Confessions page, that 27 of the 110 people released from prison based on DNA evidence had confessed to the crime for which they had been convicted.

A judge speaks candidly

It is not a weblog but it is based on a similar idea.  It goes further because it has a mission in mind.

Ralph Voss retired early this year as a trial judge in Missouri and has embarked on an interesting and self-limited project.  For the next 80 days, he will post his comments, observations, and opinions about the legal system, attorneys, litigants, and judges, and it appears that no holds will be barred.  From his first post, called "Opening Statement":

"The bottom line is the plaintiffs’ lawyers wanted their cases tried in the venues with the highest drug use, highest incidence of alcoholism, highest crime rates, highest school dropout rates and the highest rates of dependence on government for daily essentials.  This is where the trial lawyer feels he can get a 'fair trial.'

"This is only one small part of what almost drove me nuts as a judge.  Another thing was watching lawyers defraud their clients out of huge amounts of money in personal injury cases."

His mission: to advocate for the defeat (non-retention under the Missouri system) of five judges from various levels of the judiciary in the November 2002 election.  His targets are not named at this point, but he promises not only to identify them but to provide specific and detailed reasons for his recommendations.

There's nothing like an insider's view for fully informing the electorate.
