Stranger than fiction
The Detroit Free Press report this morning is simply astonishing:
"Less than seven months after opening Detroit Metro Airport's midfield terminal, Northwest Airlines plans to demolish and reconstruct most of one of the terminal's three new concourses as part of a $100-million expansion.
"Northwest declined to comment on why it plans to tear down most of a concourse that opened only early this year. But an aviation expert speculated that the nation's No. 4 airline sees an opportunity to seize a bigger slice of the Midwest market by flying more regional jets.
"Airline passengers who paid to build Concourse C now will pay to demolish and rebuild it. They pay a ticket surcharge capped at $4.50 by the federal government."
Concourse C is used for regional commuter flights.
This foolishness demonstrates that Northwest has lost touch with any sense of rationality. I hope that Washington remembers the stupidity permeating these kinds of business decisions when, as is inevitable, Northwest comes looking for Federal help to keep its operations going.
