Raisin' beef
An Atlanta supermarket chain has announced that it will begin selling irradiated meat next year. The packages will carry the "radura" symbol and a statement that the food has been treated.
This is an up-and-coming issue. There is a large segment of the population which has a fear of anything linked to radiation, and from groups pandering to this segment predictably come loud protests and scaremongering. There have already been reports that test marketing of these products has failed in several areas.
There is a downside. Although radiation is an excellent way to kill bacteria in food products, there is a risk that its use would lead producers to offer marginal items which would otherwise not be permitted to be sold. "It's two days past the Sell By date? Just zap it and put it out."
