Stonehenge under the sea

Large white stones laid out in a geometric pattern are found on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, off the western coast of Cuba.  The discoverers are reluctant to "use the A word".  (San Francisco Chronicle)

Treatment instead of incarceration

Brian Dickerson describes his visit to Oakland County's Adult Treatment Court, an alternative judicial forum designed to intervene in the pattern of addiction for those offenders who are motivated to break the cycle.

For further information, see "Drug court to treat, not punish - Oakland plan avoids prison sentences for drug-abuse offenders" (Kevin Smith, Detroit News - September 2000), which includes a sidebar describing ten similar programs across the state of Michigan, and "Adult Drug Treatment Court" (PDF) by Kevin M. Oeffner, Oakland Circuit Court Administrator, in the July 2001 issue of Laches, the Oakland Bar Association journal.   The Court maintains a web site for the program.
