My 2 cents on audio blogging

I ran across this weblog entry by Jeremy Allaire and thought that the idea was very cool.  I started thinking about my voice being the medium for communicating with others instead of typed text and being able to listen to other people's audio blogs.  Cool indeed.

And then it dawned on me that I don't really like my voice that much - I've heard it time and again on my home answering machine and on the Audix system we have it work.  The quality of one's voice is probably a minor factor for most people contemplating audio blogs (vs. text based), but there are other factors that the audio blogger must consider like language dependence, linear access to information and content editing.

  • Text has a greater chance of being consumed/understood by more people than the language in which one decides to record an audio blog entry, especially with text translation services available on the web.
  • Text can also be randomly accessed, meaning that the reader can jump to any part of an article quickly and easily.  Audio is meant to be sequentially accessed, meaning that the listener hits play and listens from beginning to end.  I know you can rewind, pause and fast forward audio - but that isn't what I would call quick and easy access.
  • Text editing is simple and straight forward, allowing for insertions at any point, as well as deletions.  Unless a sophisticated audio editing application is used, most audio bloggers will simply hit the stop button and start recording all over again from the beginning.
I might be proven wrong in the future, but for now I think audio blogging is an interesting demonstration of technology, that will not have the widespread adoption that text blogging currently has.
