ILLINOIS SECRETARY OF STATE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 11, 2003   Illinois State Library Obtains Grant From Gates Foundation For Statewide Web Based Training Initiative SPRINGFIELD — Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announced that the Illinois State Library has received a Public Library Training Grant totaling $201,750 from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation U.S. Library Program to develop a much-requested, statewide Web based training program for Illinois librarians. SLS/CLS Merger Approved by the SLS Board. All five resolutions concerning the proposed merger of the Suburban Library System and the Chicago Library System were passed at the July 21st Board meeting. The resolutions were as follows: 1) Resolved, that the Suburban Library System and the Chicago Library System merge as of July 1, 2004. 2) Resolved, that the Executive Director of the Merged System be Alice Calabrese. 3) Resolved, that a transition team consisting of the Boards of the Suburban Library System and the Chicago Library System would be formed to plan the merger. 4) Resolved, that the grants for transition money be submitted to the Illinois State Library. 5) Resolved, that the services of Alice Calabrese be obtained as the Interim Executive Director through an intergovernmental agreement. Tuesday, June 24, 2003 "BASICS AND BEYOND" DIGITIZATION WORKSHOP DES PLAINES HISTORICAL SOCIETY, TUESDAY, JULY 22, 2003 The Illinois Digitization Institute will be offering cultural heritage institutions a one-day workshop on digital imaging at the Des Plaines Historical Society on Tuesday, July 22, 2003. This workshop will introduce participants from museums and libraries to issues involved in planning digitization projects that will allow them to make informed decisions about starting such projects. The following topics will be addressed: * Advantages and disadvantages of digital imaging * How to plan successful andsustainable projects * Equipment choices * Digitization techniques * Professional standards for digitalimages * Making use of the Illinois Digital Archives (IDA) In addition to presentations on these topics, plenty of time will be allowed for questions and general discussion. The workshop will run from 9:30 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. The registration fee is $45.00 per person and includes lunch. This workshop is part of a series of workshops. Each one-day workshop will cover the same topics, but will be held at different locations around the state. Other workshops are scheduled for: Champaign Public Library, August 4, 2003; East Moline Public Library, August 19, 2003; Elgin Area Historical Society, Sept. 16; Chicago Historical Society, Oct. 6; and Southern Illinois University, Nov. 3. 9:54:18 AM
