Hello from sunny Orlando! It's just past 8AM here at the Macromedia DevCon, and everyone is standing outside the keynote exhibition hall waiting to swoop in and see what we have on the table to thrill and amaze them this year. I think we won't disappoint.
The reception last night was a lot of fun, and I got the opportunity to talk to a bunch of customers about their use of Macromedia technology and what they'd like to see into the future. The combined customer base from what were the Allaire server-side products (my side of the world) and the Flash/Director/Dreamweaver side makes for some very interesting juxtapositions. People are talking about how to streamline the development process to easily integrate pieces from their hardcore developers with visual designs from their creative team. Great stuff, we want to do that too. I've also gotten a lot of questions / comments about "componentizing" Flash to make it more natural for building UIs - well, keep an eye out folks, we hear you, which is all I can say at the moment.
It's a very vibrant group (2300 attendees this year, I think) of intelligent and curious people, who want to learn how to take their skills to the next level. I'm excited to be here, and can't wait to see how the collaboration of company and customers evolves. I'm co-presenting a session on Web Services with JRun 4 in a couple of hours, then running a Web Services BOF tomorrow night. Thus far I'm getting a lot of "Web Services? Yeah, we want to do that once the technology stabilizes, but not yet..." - I'm curious to hear what people in the trenches have to say about their experiences, and how we can make them better.
OK, keynote time! More at some point in the next couple of days. (thank goodness for wireless net access!)
