It's just human nature to think that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. At a recent panel I told about my excitement when I was first going to visit Intuit (makers of Quicken) in Silicon Valley. I had some business in San Francisco and took the train down the coast. I passed Palo Alto, Stanford and other tech-worthy spots on my way and was psyched to see Intuit.
When I got in the building I was shocked to see row after row of cubilces that made Dilbert's office look open and casual. Of course other trips to Silicon Valley have been more to my expectations (Borland has a fantastic campus!) but you can never be sure so be careful what you envy or wish for.
I was reminded of this as I returned from a stop at Channel 5 WEWS just around the corner at 30th and Euclid. We were there to award Weatherman Brad Sussman the Favorite Weatherman 2002 Award from a vote on one of my web sites - ClevelandSeniors.Com - it's a site geared toward the growing online community of people 50 years old and over.
Brad took us on a little tour of the place and it's a cool building (7th or 8th oldest TV studio in the country) but I was reminded of my Intuit experience when I saw the room full of cubicles. All the on-air personalities have a little cubicle that they work and prepare and even do make up at. From anchors to newbie reporters - that little box is their office. Of course the weather people have a room with some cool equipment (haven't seen a Silicon Graphics box for awhile)
So when you think that the other guy has a more glamorous life than you, remember the cubicles and relax.
