Ever wonder about the technology challenges at the world's 4th largest company?

At the NEOSA CIO Symposium held on Wednesday (10/23/02), the CTO of British Petroleum (BP) gave the keynote lunch presentation.

One of the more interesting items was  his prediction of  the 4 major technologies for the next 30-50 years:

  1.             Information Technology
  2.             Material Science
  3.             Bioscience
  4.             Mobile or Portable Energy

The real progress will be when 2 or more of those areas intersect.  Such was the case with the Genome Project.  The intersection of Bioscience and IT led to the completion of the project 10 years ahead of the predicted schedule.

He quoted Seymour Papport who said, “It always amazes me how consistently we overestimate what we can do in 2 years and underestimate what we can do in 10.”
