I heard a good analogy the other day. A coyote chases a jackrabbit. The rabbit outruns the coyote and dives into a burrow, scared out of its mind.
The coyote finally makes it to the burrow and growls around outside for about 30 seconds and then takes off looking for some easier prey.
But the rabbit is afraid that the coyote is still out there so he hides in the burrow for a week.
The story was told to encourage CIOs not to act like frightened rabbits because the coyotes have been lurking the last couple of years. Things are looking up - IDC is predicting that the global IT market will grow by 9% in 2003 taking it to the trillion dollar mark for the first time.
It's also good to remember this as we hear more stories of terror such as the DC sniper whose actions will undoubtedly be repeated by sicko copycats or terrorist colleagues. Yes, common sense and a watchful eye are necessary - but you can't let a coyote keep you underground forever.
