Stanley Hauerwas

Stanley Hauerwas took a night off from softball in Chapel Hill and addressed the New Garden Friends Meeting at Guilford College.  Early in his talk my wife and I began to wish we had brought our two sons along.

Mr. Hauerwas does have a talent for phrasing his questions:

"If a war is not a just war, what is it?"

"We have a National Cathedral? What is that?"

Regarding the 9/11 attack, he sounded like a director of the John Birch Society:

"You don't go to war against murderers, you arrest them."

One of the best comments of the night came from Randy in the audience.  A marine in Vietnam,  he told how he found himself being challenged by a woman in a bar who thought Vietnam veterans were not real soldiers compared to the brave men who fought in WWII.  He was taking a stance against the "War on Iraq."  The woman shouted at him, "What would you do about Saddam Hussein then? His riposte silenced her, "Well ma'am, what is your combat experience?"
