Stanley Hauerwas Stanley Hauerwas took a night off from softball in Chapel Hill and addressed the New Garden Friends Meeting at Guilford College. Early in his talk my wife and I began to wish we had brought our two sons along. Mr. Hauerwas does have a talent for phrasing his questions: "If a war is not a just war, what is it?" "We have a National Cathedral? What is that?" Regarding the 9/11 attack, he sounded like a director of the John Birch Society: "You don't go to war against murderers, you arrest them." One of the best comments of the night came from Randy in the audience. A marine in Vietnam, he told how he found himself being challenged by a woman in a bar who thought Vietnam veterans were not real soldiers compared to the brave men who fought in WWII. He was taking a stance against the "War on Iraq." The woman shouted at him, "What would you do about Saddam Hussein then? His riposte silenced her, "Well ma'am, what is your combat experience?" 10:41:09 PM![]() |
