Editorial: Local legislative races present little suspense

While I do admit I am not the most experienced speaker (I am working on this, believe me-Even if I'm not elected I won't stop here), Doug Clark has not done his research. Libertarians elected to state office can get support.

While Mr. Clark is entitled to his opinion, I would like to rebut his assumption that, as a Libertarian in the North Carolina State House I would “win no favorable committee assignments and find no one to back any bills she might file.” This is an absurd myth.

While we have had no Libertarian state house victories in North Carolina, we have had at least ten elected Libertarian state representatives in New Hampshire, Vermont, Minnesota, and Alaska since 1978.

In1996, New Hampshire Libertarian State Representative Don Gorman sponsored a bill to make sure that "all constitutional guarantees are met." before police can set up road blocks. This bill was passed by the New Hampshire General Assembly and signed into law.

Even though Vermont Libertarian Neil Randall’s bill to pass a tax credit for Vermont home schoolers was shot down, he was able to get 39 co-sponsors.

In 1993, Libertarian Miriam Luce was appointed to the New Hampshire State Liquor Commission.

Several elected libertarian state legislators in Alaska and hundreds of elected Libertarians across the counrty have been instrumental in reducing the tax burden.

I have enjoyed getting to know Republican and Democrat candidates while on the campaign trail. I was invited to a Republican candidate’s fundraiser, made some friends along the way, and have many of the same concerns about North Carolina that many citizens do. I have attended more forums and answered more surveys than my opponent, including project Vote Smart’s National Political Awareness Test which can be viewed at: http://www.vote-smart.org/ .

While I cannot speak for other people, as a citizen I refuse to vote for “career politcians” and those who seek their own agendas. All people need to be represented equally, and our Bill of Rights should be respected by our government, not trampled on. That is why I’m in this race. I find it interesting that the editor would support someone who has been described as an “opportunist” in an earlier editorial.  I am in this race to uphold the Constitutional rights of the people, and nothing more.

According to the 2000 National Political Awareness Test, my Republican opponent Steve Wood supports term limits for NC legislators. Apparently this would have to be forced upon him, as he has already served seven terms. So much for standing by what he says.
