Spam News

§ - Caller IDs to Reveal Telemarketer Numbers

Now the name displayed by Caller ID must either be the company trying to make a sale or the firm making the call. The display must also include a phone number that consumers can call during regular business hours and ask that the company no longer call them.

§ - FTC and International Agencies Announce "Operation Secure Your Server"

The participating agencies have identified tens of thousands of owners or operators of potentially open relay or open proxy servers around the world, and the agencies are sending letters urging the owners and operators to protect themselves from becoming unwitting sources of spam.

§ - FTC Proposes Adult Spam Labels

As part of its proposal, the FTC would require senders to include the label in e-mail headers and within messages, as part of a virtual "brown paper wrapper." The wrapper would "be what a recipient would initially see when opening a message containing sexually oriented material," according to the FTC, meaning that "no other information or images" would be visible at first.

§ - Now MyDoom.B Virus Blocks Help for Victims

The variant, emerging just two days after the first version, not only clogs up e-mail traffic and in-boxes, but also prevents victims from visiting anti-virus websites for help.

§ - Spam History by 2006

A spam-free world by 2006? That's what Microsoft chairman Bill Gates is promising. "Two years from now, spam will be solved." ... During the wide-ranging discussion, however, he conceded that his prognostications have not always been on the mark.

§ - That Gibberish in Your In-Box May Be Good News

The spammers' messages are becoming harder and harder to decipher. Sense is inevitably degenerating into nonsense, like a pileup of random mutations in an endangered species gasping its last breaths.

I was just thinking about how the scams I'd like to see on the Internet would be some kid from Pocahontas, Illinois, emailing millions of people telling them that he is in the process of receiving a large sum of money from his mom, who doesn't want his dad to know about it, requiring transfer of the amount to a third party. That might be the ultimate fun scam - e-mail (and you'd obviously get alot of innocents in the mix) every single Nigerian or South African or e-mail scam nation d'jour with that message.
