When Kevin Jarvis returned to the San Diego Padres last year after needing arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow, the team wasn't happy with what it saw.
Jarvis struggled as a part-time starter, going 4-6 with a 5.87 ERA, and the Padres were eager to get rid of his $4.5 million salary. San Diego packaged him in the deal that sent Mariners third baseman Jeff Cirillo to the Padres.
Jarvis expects big things this year.
"I'm hoping for the second-year syndrome to kick in," he said.
Pitchers frequently find it takes a year of pitching regularly before the velocity and crispness of breaking pitches comes back after arthroscopic surgery.
Jarvis likely will be the Mariners' sixth starter and long reliever.
However, Seattle used just five starters last year, and all five—Freddy Garcia, Jamie Moyer, Joel Pineiro, Ryan Franklin and Gil Meche—return.
"What happened here last year was extraordinary," Jarvis said. "In San Diego, it was the other side of the coin—guys were in and out of the rotation all the time."
